A person has the INTP personality type if he thinks before they act, focuses internally and deals with things with logic and rationality. INTPs are known to always seek logical explanations about everything they find interesting. This personality type makes up around three percent of the general population, which is a total of 10,181,587. It is much less common in the United States than other personality types. In the US alone, there are more men who are INTP than women. Compared to other introverted personality types, there are more men who are INTP, especially for thinking personalities.
INTP stands for Introverted Intuitive Thinking Perceiving. INTPs are known to place the most value on knowledge. However, they are not the type who likes controlling or leading people. In fact, they are most tolerant and flexible in a lot of circumstances, unless the beliefs they firmly hold are questioned or disrespected. When that happens, they are most likely to take a very stern stance. People who are INTP are mostly shy when it comes to meeting new people despite the fact that they are self-confident and gregarious around people they have known for a long time.
Introverted Thinking (Ti)
The INTP’s dominant function is introverted thinking, which is a judging function. What does this mean? Introverted thinking is applying logic and reason for the sake of understanding a specific situation, problem or system. To bring structure and order to the world introverted world of the INTPs, they use this function. They also firmly believe that conceptual evaluation and analysis are extremely important, but are not for everyone.
They thrive to achieve absolute correctness and find out about the universal truth. INTPs also believe that all things can be defined, categorized and systematized into a single widely accepted conceptual idea. These people feel the need to categorize and define their ideas, unlike INTJs who refuse to accept strict conceptual definition unless there is evidence that can render it indisputable. Sometimes, because people with this personality type has a keen awareness of specificity, garnering them the reputation of being neurotic and drives other personality types to their limits.
Most INTPs perform best in areas where they can make good use of their sense of internal structural identity, where they can widen the scope of the problem and where they can discover a new area they can work out all intricacies. Furthermore, INTPs thrive in careers that allow them to find a sense of purpose for helping develop or clarify things to improve human understanding.
Extroverted iNtuition (Ne)
Extraverted intuition is an auxiliary function of INTP people, which can function expressively or perceptively. The Ne function equates to “brainstorming aloud.” This is why INTPs may not seem to always have a point when orating because they might quickly jump from one idea to another. They could also suddenly sound incoherent even with ideas that might seem inwardly logical and sensible.
With this auxiliary function, INTPs may not gather information just for the sake of doing so. Rather, they look beyond sense data to ensure they are able to uncover hidden patterns and possibilities. Moreover, INTPs strive to see the truth on both sides without making unsolicited judgments and premature conclusions.
Introverted Sensing (Si)
The INTP’s tertiary function is a conservative function, unlike the Ne or Se function. This involves having attachments to past experiences and precedent. With Si in their functional stack, INTPs are more likely to eat a fairly routine diet. They live by the mantra “eating to live” rather than “living to eat.” INTPs are not only conservative in their diet, but also the material world. This means that most people with this personality type are savers, not spenders. They also believe that too much consumption of material things is unnecessary, even immoral. Aside from that, they have little to no need for physical pleasures, worldly comforts and luxurious surroundings.
The Si function in the INTP personality type makes people have a strong perception of internal bodily sensations. This is why INTPs perform exceptionally well in activities that require close attention to the body’s internal state, which include Tai Chi, Yoga, meditation or other.
Extraverted Feeling (Fe)
The Fe function is an inferior function, which impacts the INTP’s behaviors and decisions. This function may influence an INTP’s choice of career, enticing them to pursue a line of work that doesn’t fit them well. So, to avoid being subconsciously controlled by this function, people with the INTP personality seek self-knowledge and personal growth to ensure that they are able to understand how such function manifests in people’s personality.
The INTP people’s dominant trait is Thinking. This means that these people make decisions based on logic ultimately, while also taking advantage of objective considerations. INTPs are quite attuned with their thinking skills, often searching for more than one solution to a problem before using their rationality and logic.
People who share the INTP personality also value truth, justice and principle. This means that INTPs are individuals who are genuinely concerned with morality. Aside from that, they are quite analytical and critical as they tend to use their skills in thinking deep to ensure they are able to deal with scenarios in an objective manner.
INTPs love the idea of imparting their knowledge to others. This is why they strive to gain knowledge and wisdom, which they can use to enlighten others. However, they may become impatient with those who cannot grasp things quickly and independent like them. This is also the reason that a lot of INTPs are not suited to teaching others, but are better off teaching others or sharing insights.
People with INTP have an endless desire for affirmation or validation. By making connections, people would feel validated, valued and understood. INTPs may be able to read other people’s feelings, but they do not feel what others are feeling. Although they may have difficulty in connecting with others, they still desire the same affirmation and validation.
In conclusion, INTPs are highly thinking people. But they might have a hard time making contact with their emotions.
