Having a workaholic boss is not at all that bad, especially if you are passionate about your job and starting early in your career. In fact, this is even an opportunity for you to learn the ropes of the industry. Moreover, you can benefit from your boss’ expertise and experience because workaholic bosses are often open to share their knowledge to their subordinates. This is because they want more tasks to get accomplished. If they can inspire or motivate you to throw in hours after hours at work, the better.
However, as time passes, this can get the best of you especially if work has started to take over your life. In the end, you will either get burned-out or be ineffective at work. Besides, you work to live and not vice versa. If you are starting to feel uncomfortable working longer than you should but you love your job, handling a resignation letter just isn’t the solution. There are several ways to keep your job without getting tied to your desk for 12 hours a day. Here are some tips on how to deal with a workaholic boss.
1. Take a Break.
If you are under a workaholic boss, chances are you will be pressured to meet deadlines on a daily basis especially if the nature of your job entails report submission and other paperwork. Being in this situation can also leave you stuck on your desk or workstation, not able to get up except for bladder break. If this is the case, you need to give yourself a break. Stretch your legs, walk down the hall or spend a minute or two to chat with a colleague. This will refresh your mind a bit. Working for hours on end can result to losing your concentration. Give yourself short breaks throughout the day so you can refocus and finish more tasks.
2. Do Not Be Available 24/7.
Your boss might report to the office early and leave his desk late at night. However, you don’t have to do the same so long as you get your job done on time and with quality. Do not give the impression you are available 24 hours a day just because he or she works long hours. Perhaps you can redirect your phone to a voicemail if you do not want to turn it off. It is alright to check your email and voicemail especially if it’s the month-end crunch but making this a habit will not do you good physically and mentally.
3. Know Your Limits And Set Them.
Sometimes, workaholic bosses will expect you to bring home work and even report or work from home on weekends because this is what he or she has been used to. If this was part of the contract that you signed for and you have agreed to it when you got hired, you do not have the right to complain. If this is not the case and your boss asks you to do so, you can give in several occasions but let your boss know that this will not be your standard working hours. You can also go the extra mile to make suggestions on how you can work effectively and get things done without having to give up your weekends and leave the office late. Know what you can and cannot sacrifice for your career and come up with solutions. If you will just complain about it and not offer alternatives, this might backfire on you.
4. Talk To Your Boss.
People have different ways to cope with work and certain time of day when they can perform better. If you are the type who prefers to go to your early and leave at exactly 5 p.m. you can bring up this concern with your superior. Even if other members of your team report later than you are but leave the office late to finish their tasks, you need not imitate them or join the bandwagon, so to speak. Tell your boss that you work better early in the morning and are more effective during this time. If you do well at work and do not miss deadlines, your workaholic boss will understand.
5. Organize Your Tasks.
If you have been doing this job for quite some time now, you already know what tasks need to be prioritized and those that can wait. On a weekend, you can work on organizing work that needs to be done. There might be tasks that are urgent and needs to be completed during the day and paperwork that you can deal with at the end of the work week. If your boss keeps on asking for a report to be submitted later in the week and this constant follow ups have been bothering you or stressing you out, come up with an action plan and submit it to your boss. Let your superior know that you will just inform him or her about the progress of the report. If he or she knows what is going on and is updated, there is no need for follow ups.
6. Decide On The Path You Want To Take.
Sometimes, no matter how you try, there will always be bosses who are difficult to deal with. Workaholic superiors can be handled well if you know what to do and aware of your rights. However, there are some workaholic bosses who just can’t enough. If this is the kind of boss you have, there are two options for you. Either you deal with him or her and continue with your job at the office or you hand in your resignation without burning bridges. If you choose to stick to your job, do so and don’t complain. Who knows, you can get used to it and be a workaholic yourself. Anyway, this is not bad so long as you don’t neglect your health and personal life. On the other hand, if you decide to look for another job, keep in mind that there will always be workaholic bosses you will encounter. Either way, you need to make a decision.
As an employee, you should accept the plain truth that workaholic bosses exist. Even if they do, this does not mean this is a bad thing. What is important is for you to learn how to communicate with your boss and know what you can do to deal with this situation.
